“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

Bush's hard right

He's a divider not a uniter (via Political Wire):
The Wall Street Journal notes that President Bush "has begun an election homestretch battle over domestic issues by framing the race in classic ideological terms: conservative Republican vs. liberal Democrat."

Bush's "retooled rhetoric" has encouraged Republicans "outside the campaign who have urged Bush strategists to move beyond character attacks grounded in Mr. Kerry's alleged policy flip-flops."

So Bush turns hard right in order to save his floundering campaign, even though the hard right is beginning to wonder if they want him in the first place (thanks, Smirking Chimp). Makes sense to me.
