“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

Bush weak on crime

Look, if the administration is going to support lifetime detention of terrorists suspects that they lack evidence on, then why not shred the constitution for murders and rapists as well? If the Bush administration suspects you of a crime, then that certainly should be enough reason to incarcerate you for life? You aren't going to question the morality of our leader, President Bush on this one, are you?

What bothers me the most is that we have to actually have discussions on things such as lifetime detention without evidence, or the merits of torture in modern society. It would seem that America, for all it's hatred of suppression of human rights would have pretty clear stances on these issues without exception (that would be no to both issues).

Instead, suppression of human rights becomes acceptable in the name of safety, and if you disagree then you are a weak whiner and a traitor to the country because we can do no wrong. Even worse, the President's reelection has been used to justify this way of thinking to the rest of us and the world.

Part of our plan in the battle with Al Qaeda is to isolate them from any allies. We know that a group on it's own is weaker than one that is backed by others. So why does Bush and co. continue to put forth ideas that serve to isolate us in the world as well? Isn't that a logistical contradiction?

It was nice to read that this idea seemed to fly like a lead balloon so far, with Republican Richard Lugar panning it outright. Hopefully we've heard the end of this one.
