“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

When Senators say stupid things

Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson:
"With the larger majority, of course we have more capability to get the things that we are trying to get through," she said. "But secondly, I think surely this will impact the Democrats. They should be looking at their tactics and their strategy. And I believe we have a chance for the first time in maybe 10 or 15 years to break this partisanship."

Um, claiming a mandate and forcing your bills through the Congress is not "breaking partisanship." Just wanted to clear that up.

And here's something that falls under the above category, and is one of the scariest things I've read:
DeLay, speaking to supporters after his re-election, took credit for the wider House majority. "God bless Texas," he said, smiling. "The Republican Party is a permanent majority for the future of this country."

As for an agenda for the Congress, he said it's time to address tort reform and make fundamental changes in the nation's tax code; he favors a national sales tax.

He added: "We're going to be able to lead this country in the direction we've been dreaming of for years. And we're going to put God back into the public square."

Democrats will be praying to God for the next four years. I wonder if that's what he means?

Also, it seems to be off Bush's message of reaching out to Democrats, doesn't it?
