Cheney and the Axis of Evil
In the debate on Tuesday, Senator Edwards told the American public that Dick Cheney's and his company did work with Iran, a member of Bush's "axis of evil." Cheney responded by saying it was all just a smokescreen and wholly without merit. Of course by now, we expect that Cheney is a liar. And it's true once again.
While [Cheney] headed the Houston-based oil services and construction company, Cheney strongly criticized sanctions against countries like Iran and Libya. President Clinton cut off all U.S. trade with Iran in 1995 because of Tehran's support for terrorism.
Cheney argued then that sanctions did not work and punished American companies. The former defense secretary complained in a 1998 speech that U.S. companies were "cut out of the action" in Iran because of the sanctions.
At an energy industry conference in 1996, Cheney said sanctions were the greatest threat to Halliburton and other American oil-related companies trying to expand overseas.
"We seem to be sanction-happy as a government," Cheney said. "The problem is that the good Lord didn't see fit to always put oil and gas resources where there are democratic governments."
Kinda puts his outcry on the who oil-for food program corruption in a whole new light, no?
*UPDATE* I wish to apologize for the following omissions due to a lack of sleep after 16 hours of work.
1) I should have pointed out how nothing is Cheney's fault anymore, and he even has the cahojnes to blame God for his own misdeeds.
2)I should have pointed out that statements like this point to Cheney's belief that business comes before freedom.
I regret these errors.
