Locals not thrilled with Bush's plan
This shocked me a little bit, as the area here is highly Republican and mostly responsible for people like Mary Bono in Washington:
President Bush's plan to divert a portion of Social Security revenues to personal investment accounts will be a tough sell even in the conservative Coachella Valley.
Of 31 Desert Sun readers who responded to a notice in the newspaper asking for comment on the issue, 26 said they opposed the plan before Bush pitched the idea during his State of the Union Address Wednesday night.
And could Democrats find people like this and take them on tour, perhaps?
William W. Davis of Desert Hot Springs said he thought he knew what he was doing in the stock and bond market after he retired, but managed to lose $300,000 and half of his investment income. He said his monthly $900 Social Security check now accounts for about half his income.
"The young man who's 65 years old has not had the experience to manage half his Social Security income," Davis said. "I'm 80 and I thought I knew what the hell I was doing, and apparently I didn't."
Maybe a nice commercial?
