“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

Spitting in the face of his constituents since 2000

I must admit the President has some moxie. I remember him saying during the debate that he supported a form of amnesty for illegal immigrants, but I never thought he'd propose something to upset his base so quickly after the election:
President Bush yesterday moved aggressively to resurrect his plan to relax rules against illegal immigration, a move bound to anger conservatives just days after they helped re-elect him.

The president met privately in the Oval Office with Sen. John McCain to discuss jump-starting a stalled White House initiative that would grant legal status to millions of immigrants who broke the law to enter the United States.

It makes me wonder, though, if this is a case of Bush's supporters not understanding exactly what it is he supports, or another case of Bush not caring what the people want.

I imagine that Bush just wants to lose this fight quickly (and he will) so he can get back to lowering taxes for the wealthy and underfunding school programs.

Either way, I heard Pat Buchanan showed up at the White House with some blueprints and a trowel.
