“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

Land of cheese and denial of rights

Lawmakers in Wisconsin can't decide between banning gay marriage as soon as possible before it destroys the earth (and gives people a chance to become better informed) or to put off the Armageddon talk until 2006, the next major election in the state.
"Some people think it's such a threat to marriage that we need to take care of it right away," said Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison), noting that Republicans talked up the measure in campaign literature this fall. "If this isn't anything more than a political tool to get out certain types of voters, they might wait until the 2006 ballot."

I think this removes any doubt that Republicans would be willing to politicize the denial of rights to Americans for their own gain. It's not about "protecting marriage" or whatever buzz phrase they've come up with is, it's about winning elections.
