Fear and intimidation in New Hampshire
College students who are registering in New Hampshire rather than their home state are being threatened with fines and loss of certain loan programs. Seems the Republican legislature passed some new laws since the last election:
Since the presidential election in 2000, New Hampshire's Republican-controlled Legislature and Republican governor have passed legislation that seeks to crack down on people whose permanent address is elsewhere but who want to vote in the state -- such as college students.
The law established a statewide database of voter information that officials will cross-check with Registry of Motor Vehicles records to make sure the students follow through. The state also revised the voter registration form to carry strict warnings about penalties for voter fraud -- including fines of up to $5,000 -- and about what constitutes residency: "that place to which, upon temporary absence, a person has the intention of returning"
Strange the legislature would like to see four year residents have no say in what goes on around them isn't it? I wonder what they were afraid of...
