“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

People are number two

I like that we elect representatives who look out for the people. They put their constituents needs first, and think of the political ramifications of what they do second, willing to defend their beliefs and actions in the face of any opposition.

Then there is George W. Bush:
The White House helped to block a Republican-brokered deal on Wednesday to extend several middle-class tax cuts, fearful of a bill that could draw Democratic votes and dilute a Republican campaign theme, Republican negotiators said.

The impasse was the latest sign of deep rifts among Republicans about budget issues. House and Senate Republicans had badly wanted to pass a popular tax-cutting bill before the Democratic convention next week.

Given the choice between lower taxes for the middle class and a campaign issue, it seems George Bush chooses campaign issue. Way to hold out your selfish interests George.

Way to go.
