“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

GOP block Arnold lifeline

Weird:
A bill that would allow Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to change his mind and call off the Nov. 8 special election stalled Wednesday in the Senate as Republicans refused to vote for it.

The measure by Assemblyman Johan Klehs, D-San Leandro, fell four votes short of passing on an initial roll call, but the Senate delayed announcing the final vote as the house worked into the evening on other legislation.

Democrats said the approximately $50 million that would be spent to hold the election could be better used to aid Gulf Coast hurricane victims or repair California's own levees.

So while Democrats were more than willing to help Arnold save his political future and even just delay these ballot measures until the next statewide election next year, Senate Republicans have decided to let him go down with the ship.

And speaking of going down with the ship, the latest Field Poll numbers show Arnold losing to both Democratic opponents if the election were held today.

All this is very encouraging for dtate Democrats, and as long as Westly and Angelides run positive primary campaigns, we should see a Democrat back in the Governor's house next year.
