Cats and dogs lie down together
I agree with Bob Barr:
Former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr testified on Capitol Hill that the anti-terror law's so-called "sneak and peek" provision should be scaled back. That portion of the law allows searches without notification until a later date.
Barr says such warrants are needed against suspected terrorists, but the government's usage of them in other areas needs to be limited. Supporters of the provision said such concerns are overblown.
Barr wants the law changed to require a specific time limit between the search and the notification -- and for it to be limited to national security issues.
There's a reason this "sneek and peek" searches haven't been used in the past - it has something to do with unreasonable search and seizure. Knowing that, at this point, the cops could come and search your home because they don't like you without having to notify you until you leave the neighorhood seems to be a bit unreasonable to me.
The right would probably respond that we need to prove abuses have already occured. That's the same as saying there's no need to clean up broken glass until someone cuts their foot or throw out spoiled milk until someone drinks it and gets sick. The potential for damage is there, and without changes there is nothing to restrict that abuse.
