Shame on you, Constitution!
Here comes the religious right, led by Pat Robertson, with a posse to keep Bill Frist honest:
Evangelist Pat Robertson indicated Tuesday that if Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist expects backing of religious conservatives for a possible 2008 presidential bid, he had better get President Bush's judicial nominees confirmed by the Senate, or at least voted on.
"It is the ultimate test," Robertson said at the National Press Club. "He cannot be a leader and allow Democrats to do what they did in the last session."
What Democrats did last session is give Bush the best confirmation record in at least twenty years. That, it seems, is not enough for Robertson and friends, who want the system of minority safeguards to come to an end. It's an odd gambit, but one the Democratic leadership seems unafraid to force.
Of course, Frist has been hard talk and announced already that he has the votes to "go nuclear" anyway, meaning Robertson will get credit only for cheering the inevitable if Frist goes through with it or demonstrating that he has no power over the Senate if Frist does not. It's not much of a win either way for old Pat.
Of course, he's not one to shy away from over the top rhetoric, either:
"To the evangelicals, that is the number one consideration," Robertson said, saying "unelected judges" were largely responsible for laws on abortion, gay marriage and Internet pornography.
Of course, the legislature is responsible for laws and the courts merely interpret said laws Constitutionality. Which means that Robertson actually should blame the Constitution for abortion and pornography.
Darn liberal Constitution, giving people freedom.
*UPDATE* Praise for the filibuster... from a Republican?
*UPDATE AGAIN* I see why Pat Robertson is so adament about this, seeing as G-d told him he was ready to remove a number of Supreme Court judges.
