Bush upsets everybody
In my continuing effort to give Democrats the Rovian benefit of the doubt (that is, to give them credit for things they don't deserve but will help grow their aura as politically brilliant), I applaud the lack of fight they seem to be giving to the choice of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General.
Why? Because they knew that the religious conservatives would come out swinging:
An anti-abortion group Thursday accused President Bush of ignoring his anti-abortion principles in nominating White House counsel Alberto Gonzales for the post of attorney general.
"As a Texas Supreme Court justice, Gonzales' rulings implied he does not view abortion as a heinous crime," said Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, in a written statement.
Democrats know that Bush cannot govern from the far right and still set up the Republicans to win the election in 2008. So they intend to drive a wedge between the religious Conservatives and the rest of the party. Their plan (so Rovian), is to force the extreme right to form their own political party come 2008 which will split the Republican vote and allow them the Democrats to coast into the White House.
Absolutely brilliant!
Actually, I tend to agree with the idea that there are people far worse than Gonzales out there, and if we shoot this guy down, one of them could be appointed. That doesn't mean I support him, but I am on the fence for now.
