“This administration is populated by people who’ve spent their careers bashing government. They’re not just small-government conservatives—they’re Grover Norquist, strangle-it-in-the-bathtub conservatives. It’s a cognitive disconnect for them to be able to do something well in an arena that they have so derided and reviled all these years.”

Suppression of disbelief

I must say I am saddened to read that the GOP is reaching out to black churches by encouraging them to suppress a part of our society. Even more disappointing is that in some areas the idea seems to be working.

Note, though, the Republicans come up a little short on other aspects of the "Black Contract on Moral Values," especially the part about healthcare for the poor, as we have seen previously. I'm also not sure that Cheney is going to be thrilled at the idea of punishing companies exploring for oil anywhere, but that's just me.

Are Republicans going to give in on the things that this "Black Contract" asks for in exchange for the ideas this contract already supports? I'm not thinking so. But if Democrats reaffirm their belief in the principles that they do agree with, there should be no problems here.
