Facts 1, Bush 0
Doesn't the media know that if they continue to report the truth in the face of misstatements made by the Bush administration, that they easily open themselves up for assaults as being out of touch with middle America?
Rex Nutting never got the memo. He points out a number of misstatements made by our fear inspiring leader. For example:
Bush: "As a matter of fact, by the time today's workers who are in their mid-20s begin to retire, the system will be bankrupt. So if you're 20 years old, in your mid-20s, and you're beginning to work, I want you to think about a Social Security system that will be flat bust, bankrupt, unless the United States Congress has got the willingness to act now."
The facts: The Social Security system cannot go "bankrupt," for it has no creditors. By law, the trustees will continue to pay reduced benefits even if the trust fund is exhausted. Payroll taxes will continue to come in and benefits will continue to be paid.
It's an effective lie. I've had a few conversations with folks on the Social Security issue, and almost everyone brings this up. They are quite surprised when I point out the government can put as much money as it wants into the system, and that, baring an act of Congress, Social Security payments will continue to go out on time.
In fact, when I point out Bush's plan will accelerate a 2 trillion dollar debt and that, according to my understanding of projections, actually feature smaller guaranteed payouts then the current system, they are generally fall against Bush's reform.
If my understanding is correct, then this might be an effective way to campaign against the Bush plan.
