Educate me
Another running theme on the right at the moment is that Democrats just don't get the red states, and until they do, they are bound to lose elections. So maybe someone on the right can explain to me the wisdom of ignorance and exclusion in the classroom in Texas:
New public school health textbooks that teach abstinence exclusively and address concerns about homosexuality by defining marriage as the union between a man and a woman were adopted Friday.
Only one of 14 State Board of Education members present at the meeting voted against the books, which were widely criticized for failing to provide information to help teens avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Dallas Democrat Mavis Knight said she voted against the books because they failed to include required information about contraceptives.
Two publishers agreed to make minor changes after some board members Thursday expressed concern that the books tacitly endorsed same-sex marriages by references to "partners" instead of "husbands and wives."
Holt, Rinehart and Winston included the following sentence in its health books for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders: "Marriage is a lifelong union between a husband and a wife."
In fact, all reference to "partners" in the context of marriage had to be excised according to some because they claimed it would violate state law. Yes, that's right, it's against the law to discuss love and commitment for everybody in schools in Texas.
Also, I understand that young boys in Texas cheered the decision because they will no longer have to listen to their girlfriends pressure them into using a condom.
Red staters, you see a couple of my concerns (I also think this will lead to a higher pregnancy and STD rate among the youth of Texas in several years). In an effort to learn more about my parties shortfalls, please explain to me the morals and values of this decision. I thank you in advance.
